UNIDO and its implementation partners will carry out a number of awareness raising activities targeting various relevant stakeholders including an international conference and exhibition on biomass gasification. The activities in this component will be aimed at improving the awareness of the benefits of using biomass gasification technology among decision-makers from public sector, SMEs, academia and other relevant stakeholders and facilitating academic and technology cooperation in the field of biomass gasification.

The activities of this component are aimed addressing the specific capacity development needs of various stakeholders in a position to influence the promotion and development of the biomass gasification in Pakistan such as SMEs, research and vocational training institutions, public sector institutions, financial institutions and rural communities. UNIDO will conduct specifically designed trainings for stakeholders based on identified training needs and facilitate the development of research and technical training curricula and facilitate technology and research cooperation match-making between local and international entities.

Under this component, UNIDO will provide technical assistance for the development of concrete policy recommendations for policies and regulations relevant to the promotion of modern biomass technologies (particularly gasification) for both existing and future policy regimes. Based on international best practices, UNIDO's support will cover prevalent policies, implementation rules, biomass pricing, energy regulations and advisory on policy-level initiatives for the indigenization of efficient biomass combustion and gasification technologies.

Technical assistance from UNIDO will also include the development of quality standards for biomass gasification with the purpose to ensure and incentivize biomass gasifiers of acceptable quality.

In order to demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of modern biomass conversion technologies in Pakistan, the implementation of three biomass based power units with high replicability potential will be supported by the UNIDO project. Two of these demonstration units will be for industrial captive power generation while one will have a focus on rural energy provision. The demo units supported by UNIDO will have a combined installed capacity of over 3 MW.

Results and Achievements


The UNIDO Pakistan biomass energy project has successfully implemented the following initiatives:
 

  • Feasibility studies for 3MW and 1 MW biomass gasification based combined heat and power application at a rice and wood processing mill in Pakistan
  • Policy advisory on (i) promotion of the biomass energy sector in Pakistan, (ii) developing minimum quality standards for biomass gasification technologies and (iii) pricing and management for biomass resource
  • Study on needs assessment of key market players of biomass gasification technology in Pakistan
  • International Conference and Exhibition on Biomass Gasification at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in July 2016.
  • MoU between Purdue University USA and two Pakistani engineering universities for research and academic cooperation in the field of biomass with possibilities of research scholar and faculty exchanges
  • MoU for technology cooperation between a Pakistani biomass gasifier manufacturer and a European engineering consulting firm regarding technical design and manufacturing improvements
  • Series of five 1-day capacity development and awareness creation workshops targeting industry, service providers, academia and rural communities
  • Training manual on design, fabrication and O&M of Biomass Gasification systems
  • Several awareness raising initiatives on national radio and print and social media
     

The following initiatives are currently in progress:
 

  • Implementation of two high-efficiency biomass combustion based power generation demonstration units for industry
  • Feasibility study and implementation for up to 300 kW biomass gasification demonstration system for rural electrification application
  • Development of university curriculum for engineering course on modern biomass conversion technologies to be taught at two engineering universities in Pakistan
  • Development of poly-technical course of operation and maintenance of biomass energy systems including gasifiers
